Rakesh Bedi talks about Dhurandhar role, real-life inspiration and working with Aditya Dhar

Known largely for his memorable comic roles, veteran actor Rakesh Bedi surprised audiences with a sharp and layered performance in Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller Dhurandhar. On the latest edition of SCREEN Spotlight, Bedi spoke in detail about stepping into the shoes of Jameel Jamali, a shrewd politician from Pakistan’s Lyari region, and how he approached the intense character.

Bedi described Jamali as a man driven entirely by power. His character is willing to sacrifice personal relationships, even agreeing to marry off his daughter to a violent gangster, played by Ranveer Singh, as long as it helps him stay close to his political “kursi”. While the film is violent in parts, Bedi pointed out that his role operates differently. “I’m not physically violent, but I’m pulling the strings,” he explained, adding that violence is ingrained in the character’s mindset.

The actor admitted that his performance is inspired by a real-life Pakistani politician, though he refrained from naming anyone. Online discussions have speculated similarities with figures like Nabeel Gabol, but the makers have maintained that Dhurandhar remains a fictional story inspired by real events.

Bedi revealed that he studied visuals, speeches and body language to shape the role within the film’s narrative. He also spoke fondly about collaborating with Aditya Dhar and Ranveer Singh, calling the experience creatively fulfilling. During the conversation, Bedi also revisited memories of Sai Paranjpye’s Chashme Buddoor, reflecting on his long and diverse career.
