Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has sparked fresh debate over the upcoming theatrical clash between Yash’s Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown Ups and Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the director shared a strongly worded note describing the March 19 release as more than just a competition between two big films.
Varma described the face-off as a “David vs Goliath” moment in Indian cinema. Referring to the massive box office performance of KGF Chapter 2, he suggested that earlier box office giants now appear smaller in comparison to the scale of Dhurandhar. However, with Toxic entering the arena, he believes the dynamics have shifted yet again.
According to Varma, the clash is not about Bollywood versus Sandalwood or North versus South. Instead, he sees it as a confrontation between two filmmaking philosophies. In his view, Dhurandhar trusts the intelligence of its audience, while Toxic underestimates them.
Citing the reported budget and earnings of Dhurandhar, Varma argued that its global success proved that mainstream viewers respond to layered storytelling when treated with respect. He credited filmmaker Aditya Dhar for not underestimating the masses, saying the film’s performance was a loud response from audiences who want meaningful cinema.
With both mega-budget films gearing up for release, Varma’s remarks have added fuel to an already intense box office battle.
