Rani Mukerji disagrees with AR Rahman’s remarks; calls Bollywood a truly secular space

Actor Rani Mukerji has shared her views on the ongoing debate sparked by AR Rahman’s recent remarks about shifting power structures in the music industry. Rahman’s comments, in which he suggested that decision-making power now rests with “people who are not creative” and hinted that it “might be a communal thing,” drew widespread criticism and backlash.

Addressing the issue in an interview with DD News, Rani made it clear that she does not agree with Rahman’s perspective. The actor strongly defended the Hindi film industry, describing it as one of the most secular environments she has worked in during her long career. Drawing from her nearly three decades in Bollywood, Rani said she has never personally experienced discrimination based on caste or religion.

Emphasising her belief in merit, Rani stated that success in the industry ultimately depends on the work one does and the connection an artist builds with the audience. She credited the film industry for shaping her career and said she speaks from personal experience and gratitude. According to her, talent and consistency matter more than background, and those who resonate with viewers continue to thrive.

Rani also addressed conversations around the existence of regional or language-based groups within the industry, such as Bengali, Punjabi or Malayali lobbies. She dismissed such narratives, saying she prefers to stay away from labels and divisions, and focuses solely on her work.
