Ranveer Singh’s much-awaited war film Dhurandhar has been thrust into an unexpected legal battle just weeks before its release. The film, praised for its intense teaser and gripping soundtrack, has been taken to the Delhi High Court by the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma, AC(P), SM, who was posthumously honoured with the Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal.
In their petition, Major Sharma’s parents allege that the makers drew heavily from the officer’s life, missions, and martyrdom without seeking permission from the family or the Indian Army. They claim the film’s visuals and promotional material bear a striking resemblance to Major Sharma’s covert operations in Kashmir. The plea further argues that sensitive military tactics have been depicted without clearance and accuses the makers of commercialising the officer’s legacy.
However, as conversations on social media intensified, director Aditya Dhar stepped forward with a firm public clarification. Responding to Major Sharma’s brother on X, he wrote that Dhurandhar is not inspired by the brave officer’s life. He assured that if a biopic on Major Sharma is ever made, it will be created only with the family’s full consent and handled with utmost respect.
The petition names the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, CBFC, ADGPI, Aditya Dhar, and Jio Studios as respondents. The Delhi High Court is yet to fix a hearing date, while the Sharma family has urged mandatory ADGPI approval for future military portrayals.
