On the shore of the Bhadrak district of Odisha, a rare pygmy killer whale was discovered dead, according to officials on Sunday. According to them, the whale was discovered dead on Saturday morning close to the Kasia fishing jetty.
According to Basudevpur’s Forest Range Officer Atulya Kumar Mohanty, the whale was approximately 15 feet long and 6 feet wide, weighing between 800 and 1,000 kilogrammes. According to him, pygmy killer whales are rarely spotted because they usually live in deep waters.
“It may have suffered injuries from a boat or a trawler, which probably drifted it towards the shore,” he said. Block Veterinary Officer Sudipta Jena and Marine Fisheries Extension Officer Jagadish Barik performed a necropsy on the cadaver after it was brought to the Forest Department’s Basudevpur office.
Another official stated that tissue and blood samples were taken for additional examination and that an inquiry has been launched to determine the precise cause of its demise. The whale, which lives in tropical and subtropical waters, had drawn a sizable crowd to the beach. Despite having a “whale” in its name, the mammal is a member of the dolphin family and is distinguished by its dark eyepatch and white lips, according to officials.
