The Delhi Police said on Saturday that they arrested the primary suspect in actress Rashmika Mandanna’s viral deepfake. Rashmika’s face was superimposed on a video of Zara Patel, a British influencer.
The Rashmika case has been under investigation since November, as it was the first followed by similar deepfake videos involving Alia Bhatt, Kajol and Sachin Tendulkar. Delhi Police investigated various social media users who posted Rashmika’s deepfake but could not reach the creator.
Lately, a gaming app morphed a video of Sachin Tendulkar and began a fake promotional campaign. The Mumbai Cyber Police registered an FIR against the app when Sachin took to X and revealed that the video showed him encouraging his fans to play games on that specific app was false.
Taking to this X account Sachin wrote, “These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology. Request everyone to report videos, ads & apps like these in large numbers. Social media platforms need to be alert and responsive to complaints. Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and fake news. @GoI_MeitY, @Rajeev_GoI and @MahaCyber1.”
