Red alert issued in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry as Cyclone Ditwah approaches

The head of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated today that Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry should prepare for more intense rainfall as cyclone Ditwah approaches the Indian coast. Additionally, a red alert has been issued for these areas by the weather service.

The cyclone is now situated in the Bay of Bengal, close to Sri Lanka, and is heading north-northwest, according to IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra. “By midnight, it will be centred about 60 kilometres off the coast of Tamil Nadu,” he stated to NDTV. Sea winds near Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have increased to 70 to 80 km/h, with gusts reaching 90 km/h, as a result of its influence, according to Dr. Mohapatra.

The storm will pass 50 kilometres off the coast of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu tomorrow morning, he said, but its consequences won’t be felt until the evening. The head of IMD added that the cyclone may only harm standing crops and that no structural damage is anticipated. Due to its effects during the past 24 hours, coastal Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry saw heavy rainfall.

For these areas, we have issued a red alert. He added, “Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall can also occur occasionally in Kerala. “Those who reside in these locations ought to exercise caution and refrain from going outside unless absolutely essential. He continued, “The rain can cause flooding and low-lying inundation.”

“In the vicinity of Andhra Pradesh’s coastal regions, sea winds have reached speeds of 50 to 60 km/h. Near Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, waves as high as eight meters have been observed,” he stated.

He called on the government and residents of coastal communities to exercise utmost caution. Yemen proposed the name “Ditwah,” which refers to a lagoon. Detwah Lagoon, a sizable saltwater lagoon on the northwest coast of Yemen’s Socotra island, is probably the source of the name.
