RG Kar Case: Bengali Actors protests Overnight demanding Justice

Film director Aparna Sen, well-known figures from the Bengali film industry, and human rights activists joined thousands of protesters on Sunday to demand for justice for a doctor who was Raped and murdered at the RG Kar hospital in this city last month.

Following the protest, members of the Mahamicchil sat in the city’s bustling Esplanade neighbourhood, pledging to remain there until four in the morning on Monday in order to pressure the government into conducting an immediate inquiry into the horrific crime and apprehending those responsible.

Following the protest, members of the Mahamicchil sat in the city’s crowded Esplanade area, promising not to leave there until four in the morning on Monday in order to pressure the government into conducting a prompt investigation into the atrocious crime and apprehending those responsible. Revolutionary songs like “Karar Oi Louho Kopat” and “We Shall Overcome” were played in the air as the act went on well after midnight.

The protest on Sunday night brought back memories of the August 14 midnight “Women Reclaim The Night” rally, which called for justice for the postgraduate trainee doctor. Two further protests were held in the city in addition to the “Mahamichhil.” In two different events that mirrored the call for justice for the medic, former students and faculty from a renowned convent school and alumni of Ramakrishna Mission-run educational institutions organised one.

Aparna Sen, along with other celebrities including Swastika Mukherjee, Sudipta Chakraborty, Chaiti Ghosal, Sohini Sarkar, and others, marched along Central Avenue at the massive rally that began at College Square on Sunday afternoon, seeking justice for the doctor. In order to discuss their demands for an immediate investigation and the arrest of those responsible, the demonstration participants insisted on meeting with a representative of the ruling party or the state government.
