RG Kar Case: ED raids Three Sites in West Bengal

An investigation into financial irregularities at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has been initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). In relation to the case, the ED carried out raids at many sites in West Bengal on Friday, including Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly.

A relative of the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, owned one of the properties that was searched in Hooghly. The ED has detained Dr. Ghosh on suspicion of financial misconduct involving the organisation.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a formal complaint (FIR) that found the purported financial irregularities, which prompted the current investigation. Dr. Ghosh was accused by the FIR of violating the Prevention of Corruption Act, criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty. Bail is not available for certain major offences. Dr. Ghosh was momentarily moved in October but returned to his role a month later.

He was the principal from February 2021 to September 2023. Following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in August of this year, the hospital was already under national scrutiny; his arrest has only served to heighten that attention.

More information is anticipated in the next couple of days as the ED continues its investigation. The scope of the financial irregularities and their effect on the institution’s operation are being extensively examined by authorities.
