The alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College has sparked outrage, with the victim’s parents accusing Kolkata Police of pressure. They allege they were forced into giving false statements in a video published by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), in which they refused any monetary offer from police officers.
The family’s charges arose barely one day after the TMC released the footage, sparking widespread outrage. On Thursday, the victim’s father claimed they were told justice might be delayed if the police became “angry.” He added that they were unaware of the video’s intent at the time, but now feel it was intended to manipulate public perception.
The issue worsened when the parents said that a senior police officer offered them money to speed up their daughter’s cremation. A doctor from the Joint Forum of Doctors verified hearing about the monetary offer and called the situation “shocking.”
TMC authorities denied these allegations, accusing the opposition of manipulating the tragedy for political gain. The Kolkata Police have yet to respond on the claims. Meanwhile, protests by other doctors at RG Kar Medical College continue, calling for transparency and justice.
The case has received national attention, complicating the inquiry as videos and testimonies from the family call into question police tactics and the overall management of the situation.
