According to the parents of the doctor from Kolkata who was brutally raped and killed last month, the police previously attempted to buy them off in order to close the case. The doctor was working the night shift when the tragedy occurred, and it has sparked large-scale protests around the state calling for immediate action.
The 31-year-old’s parents participated in a protest at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where their daughter’s death was discovered on August 9. They claimed that the police were attempting to dismiss the case without conducting a complete investigation.
“The police, from the very beginning, tried to hush up the case. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while the body was taken for post-mortem examinations,” the father said while addressing the protesters.”Later, when the body was handed over to us, a senior police official offered us money, which we immediately declined,” he added.
According to the parents, they are participating in the protest to help the junior doctors who have been fighting for their daughter’s justice. The opposition and the public have strongly criticised Kolkata Police for the way it handled the delicate matter. How the accused Sanjoy Roy had unrestricted access to every area of the state-run hospital at all hours of the day has come under scrutiny. According to certain allegations, he would allegedly offer patients illegal hospital beds and other facilities in return for cash in person.
Social media has been circulating with slogans that criticise police and remind them that they too have daughters at home. These slogans have also found a home on placards held by protesters during street marches.
