Rihanna voices as Smurfette in the latest musical adaptation of Smurfs

Paramount Pictures has finally unveiled the trailer for its upcoming animated musical Smurfs, and fans are in for a treat! The film boasts a star-studded voice cast, with none other than Rihanna stepping into the role of Smurfette. But the pop icon isn’t just lending her voice—she’s also a producer on the project and has crafted original songs for the movie, making it a must-watch for both Smurfs fans and Rihanna stans alike.

For those eagerly awaiting new music from the Diamonds singer, this film offers something exciting—fresh tracks to vibe to. Rihanna first teased her involvement in Smurfs back in 2023 during CinemaCon, where she humorously revealed, “I tried to get the Papa Smurf role, but it didn’t work out.”

Directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, with a screenplay by Pam Brady, the film features an impressive voice cast. Alongside Rihanna, audiences can expect to hear Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, Daniel Levy, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Hannah Waddingham, James Corden, and Kurt Russell, among others.

According to the official synopsis, the film follows Smurfette as she embarks on a daring adventure to rescue Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) after he is kidnapped by sinister wizards. To save him, she must venture into the “real world,” leading a group of Smurfs on an unexpected journey where they team up with new allies. Along the way, they must uncover the true meaning of their existence to protect their universe.

At last year’s Annecy Animation Festival, director Chris Miller shed light on their approach to the film. He explained that they used the original Smurfs comics by Peyo as their “blueprint,” exploring the lore and origins of the beloved blue creatures.

“We wanted to dive deeper into their world—what makes their village so magical and mysterious? How did they get there? Why are they there?” he teased, hinting that this adaptation would expand on the Smurfs’ mythology while keeping the charm of the classic franchise intact.

Fans won’t have to wait too long to see this fresh take on the Smurfs—Smurfs is set to hit theaters on July 18.
