The previous six months have been challenging for many of us, with the prospect of a pandemic still hanging large. However, many Indian athletes are working hard to make India proud, demonstrating perseverance and providing a glimmer of hope.

Ritu Phogat is one such athlete who is now in Singapore competing in a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition organized by ONE Championship, India. Ritu, in fact, is due to meet Meng Bo, a two-time Chinese MMA champion, in the quarterfinals of the 2021 ONE Women’s Atomweight Grand Prix.

Wrestling was not a new activity for Ritu or her family, who were introduced to it when she was seven years old. The term ‘Phogat’ barely needs to be explained. Aside from Aamir Khan’s film Dangal, which made Ritu’s sisters Geeta and Babita national celebrities, the Phogat sisters are well-known in their own right.
