Roma’s Mourinho, Arsenal and Tottenham in race to sign Marcel Sabitzerf

The RB Leipzig midfielder is seeking a ‘new challenge’ and Tottenham have expressed their interest in the past.

Marcel Sabitzer wants to reportedly leave RB Leipzig for a ‘new challenge’. The 27-year old has spent six seasons at the Bundesliga club and is garnering interest from various clubs around Europe. RB Leipzig have also announced their intentions of trimming the size of the squad and are open to letting players leave. Ibrahim Konate has already left for Liverpool and Dayot Upamecano will accompany his Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann to Bayern Munich.

Tottenham Hotspur have previously shown interest in the player in the past under Jose Mourinho but were put off by the €50 million release fee which Leipzig demanded. Mourinho has since been sacked by Tottenham after a poor season but was hired by AS Roma as their new manager. Mourinho reportedly still holds an interest in the Austrian midfielder and is keen to lure the player away from Tottenham and into signing for the Italian club. Mourinho has already made Roma’s first moves in the market by extending Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s current deal for two years and is also set to sign Granit Xhaka from Arsenal for a reported fee of €18 million.

Sabitzer has only 12 months left on his current contract with Leipzig, who are keen to sell him before his deal expires to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer. This could see Sabitzer sold for as little as €17.5 million. Arsenal among other Premier League clubs are also interested in signing the player as they look to complete an overhaul of their midfield after the sale of Xhaka to Roma.

Sabitzer has scored 8 goals and racked up 4 assists in 27 appearances for RB Leipzig in the 2020/21 Bundesliga season.
