Saiyaara crosses ₹500 crore amid plagiarism row; writer urges viewers to judge for themselves

As Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara celebrates a global box office milestone, writer Sankalp Sadanah addresses allegations that the film copies the Korean classic A Moment to Remember.

Mohit Suri’s romantic drama Saiyaara has joined the ₹500 crore club worldwide, cementing its status as one of the year’s biggest hits. Starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the film has drawn audiences in with its soulful music and emotionally charged love story. However, its soaring success has been shadowed by accusations that it borrows heavily from the acclaimed Korean film A Moment to Remember.

In his first public response to the controversy, Saiyaara’s writer Sankalp Sadanah told trade analyst Komal Nahta that audiences should see both films before forming conclusions. “Honestly, so much has already been said about this.
The Korean film is out there, and so is Saiyaara. Watch both and judge for yourself. You’ll be able to tell whether it’s inspired, a copy, or an original,” he said.

Sankalp revealed that the story’s origins were unplanned, emerging from an emotional conversation with Mohit Suri during a rainy day in Bandra. “There was talk of a sequel to Aashiqui 3. As I was about to leave, Mohit asked me to stay back and listen to something. He shared an idea and asked if it was worth building into a film,” he recalled, adding that a single emotional line eventually became the foundation of Saiyaara.

While thematic similarities exist  both films explore love tested by memory loss  Saiyaara’s makers maintain that the work is their own. The debate has done little to slow the film’s momentum at the box office.
