Samsung Electronics has unveiled a new 14-meter standard size for its Onyx cinema LED lineup at CinemaCon 2026. This new model is designed for Premium Large Format (PLF) theaters, expanding the Onyx platform into larger premium auditoriums. The 14-meter model delivers the same high-quality picture, reliability, and scalability that the Onyx platform is known for, but on a larger scale.
As cinemas strive to enhance the premium experiences they offer, larger-format auditoriums have become a priority for exhibitors. Samsung’s 14-meter format is crafted to meet this demand by enabling greater immersion, optimized seating layouts, and more efficient use of theater space. “People go to premium theaters for something they cannot recreate at home,” said Hyoung Jae Kim, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung’s new 14-meter Onyx gives exhibitors a way to bring the premium experience to larger auditoriums, helping turn moviegoing into a destination again.”
Since its introduction in 2017, the Samsung Onyx has expanded the capabilities of cinema LED with features like deep blacks, rich color, and striking contrast. With the previous launch of a 5-meter model for boutique theaters and a 10-meter model for premium auditoriums, Samsung is now introducing the 14-meter size for larger theater environments. This model features support for up to 4K 120Hz, ensuring exceptional clarity and ultra-smooth motion. It also includes a 3.3mm pixel pitch, optimized for delivering sharp and consistent image quality on the larger screen. The flexible scaling support allows the 14-meter format to expand up to 20 meters, more than doubling the total screen area without compromising presentation quality.
The Onyx display supports both scope (2.39:1) and flat (1.85:1) aspect ratios. Samsung’s HDR technology allows for peak brightness of up to 300 nits, which is about six times brighter than conventional cinema standards. Onyx achieves 100% color volume at peak brightness, and its infinite contrast ratio provides true black levels for deeper immersion and greater detail in dark scenes. Beyond traditional movie screenings, Onyx is also suitable for alternative content like live sports, concerts, gaming events, and corporate presentations. Unlike conventional projection-based systems, the Onyx LED screen maintains consistent brightness and image quality regardless of screen size or seating position. It is also compatible with Dolby and GDC media servers, supporting streamlined theater management.
Samsung’s Onyx lineup has seen global adoption in premium cinemas. Pathé Dar Essalam in Rabat, Morocco, features the latest Onyx as part of a new premium cinema complex. Designed in collaboration with Pathé’s headquarters, the venue is a flagship destination with four auditoriums equipped with Onyx displays. Pathé now operates more Onyx screens than any other cinema company in Europe. In the United States, Trilith Cinemas in Fayetteville, Georgia, became the first U.S. theater to premiere the latest generation of Samsung Onyx cinema LED screens in December 2025, installing them across five auditoriums. “The future of exhibition is driven by innovations that elevate how audiences experience film,” said Bo Chambliss, President of Georgia Theatre Company. “Onyx sets a new standard for image performance while remaining true to the filmmaker’s intent.”
