Sarah Michelle Gellar just gave Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans a major reason to celebrate with her heartfelt statement about the show’s rumored reboot. The actress took to Instagram to share a detailed update on the project, addressing recent reports head-on.
Her post came shortly after news broke that Hulu was reportedly close to greenlighting a pilot for the beloved series. Gellar, best known for Buffy and I Know What You Did Last Summer, took a moment to clarify where things stand and whether she’s involved.
She began her message with, “So… you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me.” She then shared a behind-the-scenes story from three years ago when her longtime friend and mentor, Gail Berman, approached her with an intriguing offer. Berman asked her to meet Nomadland director Chloé Zhao to discuss the possibility of reviving Buffy.
At the time, Gellar was taken aback—not just by the idea of a revival but also by the fact that Zhao even knew who she was. Still, she wasn’t convinced that Buffy could be brought back in a way that truly honored the original. But this time, when Berman called her again, something felt different.
Curious but skeptical, Gellar agreed to what she thought would be a brief, casual coffee chat—mainly because she wanted to meet Zhao. That meeting, however, turned into an emotional four-hour conversation filled with laughter, tears, and a deep appreciation for what Buffy meant to all of them.
Though she didn’t commit to anything right away, Gellar found herself open to continuing the conversation. Over the next few years, discussions evolved, and eventually, the creative team expanded to include Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. After countless brainstorming sessions, they finally landed on an idea that felt right.
Gellar acknowledged that she’s always been aware of the fans’ desire for a return to Buffy, but she wouldn’t even consider it unless she was certain they could do it justice.
“This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet,” she reassured. “I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”
She also expressed her gratitude for the four “incredibly talented women” she’s collaborating with, all of whom love Buffy just as much as she and the fans do. She ended her message by thanking the fans for their unwavering support, promising, “This will be for you.”
For those who may have missed the initial announcement, People magazine confirmed on February 3 that a new chapter of the iconic series is in development.
