SC grants interim bail to journalist Siddique Kappan

The Supreme Court has granted journalist Siddique Kappan an interim five-day bail to meet his 90-year-old mother said to be sick. Kappan will be taken to Kerala by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

He will not be allowed to interact with the media and public, except relatives, doctors, and close family members, the court said. The UP Police will be responsible to take him to Kerala and bring him back.

He was also allowed to speak to his mother via video call last month, but he couldn’t communicate as his mother was unconscious at the hospital.

“Kappan’s mother is clinging on to life just to see her son. Her condition was extremely critical yesterday,” Kappan’s wife Rahyanath said.

Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Kappan on October 5 last year on his way from Delhi to UP to report the alleged gang-rape and killing of a 19-year Dalit woman in Hathras.
