SC sends notice to Centre on mining project

A Supreme Court bench including Justice D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah issued notice to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ultra Tech Cement, Gujarat Pollution Control Board and Uncha Kotda Gram Panchayat among others because of a limestone mining project undertaken by UltraTech Cement.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Gagabhai Devabhai Chauhan and other people against the grant given by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to UltraTech cement for environmental clearance. The mining is to be done in three villages – Kotda, Kalsar and Dayal in Bhavnagar district. The petitioners are residents of these villages. They believe the decision of environmental clearance was taken without due consideration to various aspects involved.

Earlier the NGT said that all stakeholder concerns were put to rest by decreasing the land area to be mined by 5%.  They had dismissed a plea that was filed earlier by the petitioners.
