Selena Gomez has shown immense support for her Emilia Pérez family, despite not receiving an Oscar nomination this year. Following the announcement that her co-stars, Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, earned nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, Gomez took to Instagram Stories to express her pride. She shared a reel of her co-stars’ nomination announcement and wrote, “So incredibly proud of my @emiliaperez family!!”
While Gomez’s name wasn’t on the Oscar list this year, Emilia Pérez scored several nods, including Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and two Best Original Song nominations. The film, a musical crime drama directed by Jacques Audiard, centers on an ambitious lawyer (Saldaña) working for a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) who plans to assume a new identity after undergoing gender-affirming surgery. Gomez plays Jessi Del Monte, the estranged wife of the cartel leader.
Despite not being nominated for an Oscar, Gomez has received recognition elsewhere this awards season, with nominations for Best Supporting Actress at both the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes.
For Gascón, her Oscar nomination makes history as the first openly trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress, marking a significant cultural achievement for Emilia Pérez. Saldaña also celebrated her first-ever Oscar nomination, sharing her gratitude on Instagram: “I am truly honored and grateful for the nomination. Thank you so much for considering me for this award. I am thrilled to be among such talented company.”
The two co-stars are up against some stiff competition. Saldaña will be competing against Ariana Grande, Monica Barbaro, Isabella Rossellini, and Felicity Jones in the Best Supporting Actress category. Gascón’s fellow nominees include Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
The 2025 Academy Awards will be held on March 2, hosted by Conan O’Brien, and broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on ABC and Hulu. Fans can catch Emilia Pérez, now streaming on Netflix.
