Sergio Ramos left out of Spain’s Euro 2020 squad

Luis Enrique names his Euro 2020 squad, and not one Real Madrid player makes the team, this is including Spain’s previous captain Sergio Ramos. Ramos, 35, of Real Madrid, has been out with an injury and has only played one game since the end of March.

Due to his absence, Enrique has chosen no Real Madrid players for this summer’s postponed competition. Fifa officially accepted Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte’s move from France to Spain, and he now joins the team of 24 players.

Ramos has only recently recovered from the injury he sustained in the return leg against Chelsea, but he should have ample time to improve his conditioning and form before the Euro, so this appears to be a purely technical decision, as the coach affirmed in a news conference shortly after the list was revealed. This is what Enrique had to say:

“It was a very difficult decision but he [Ramos] has not been able to play this season and has hardly trained since January,” said Enrique.

“I called him yesterday [Sunday] – it was hard, difficult…I feel bad because he is very professional and he helps the national team a lot. And he can still help it in the future. But I have to look for the best for the squad.”

The legendary defender has appeared in every major international tournament for Spain since Euro 2004, but his record has come to an end following his withdrawal from the Spain squad for Euro 2020. Spain will play Slovakia, Sweden, and Poland in Group E in Seville’s La Cartuja Olympic stadium, with a limited number of fans permitted.

Luis Enrique’s roster contained several contentious judgments, such as leaving out Iago Aspas in favor of Pablo Sarabia or Adama Traore, while Nacho deserved to be picked ahead of Manchester City’s Eric Garcia.

The following tweet contains all the 24 players called up. The translation for the tweet:

These are the 24 footballers who will defend the colors of the  @SeFutbol on the #EURO2020. Your shout of encouragement will be our energy in the fight for the European Championship!!
