Shaily Mehrotra, CEO and co-founder of Fixderma, has stepped into the spotlight as the newest shark on Shark Tank India Season 5, bringing with her years of experience in dermatology-led skincare. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Shaily addressed the controversy around the Lewisia Wellness pitch, which drew sharp criticism from the sharks for promoting products as “natural” and for the founder referring to himself as a doctor.
Shaily did not hold back while addressing the pitch, stating that brands like Lewisia Wellness reflect a larger problem in the Indian skincare market. According to her, fairness-based marketing continues to exploit long-standing insecurities around skin tone. She pointed out that selling the promise of fair skin through fear-driven narratives targets vulnerable consumers, adding that such stereotypes should no longer define beauty or skincare in India.
Despite the heated moment, Shaily says her approach on the show remains “founder first.” She explains that while numbers matter, she places equal importance on a founder’s honesty, passion and long-term vision. For her, genuine intent and resilience often signal the true potential of a business, even more than a polished pitch.
Having run Fixderma for over 15 years, Shaily credits her deep roots in dermatological prescriptions for establishing market authority. She revealed that this science-backed credibility led to her inclusion on the show, with SonyLIV keen on adding fresh and informed perspectives. While acknowledging the risks of public scrutiny, she admits television exposure can distort narratives. Still, Shaily says she remains focused on protecting her brand’s integrity while supporting founders who aim to take Indian startups global.
