Sharmila Tagore urges compassion over Supreme Court’s stray dog directive; calls for balanced approach

The Supreme Court’s recent order to relocate all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelter homes has triggered strong public reactions, with many calling it an inhumane move. Joining the chorus of dissent, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore has urged for a more nuanced and compassionate approach to the issue.

In a video shared by NCP National Spokesperson Anish Gawande on X, Sharmila expressed deep concern, saying, “Today, we are facing a crisis of conscience. The recent Supreme Court decision is like a door closing on the voiceless and defenceless of our society. I wish the safety and sanctity of life was at the heart of the judgement.”

She stressed the need to address systemic flaws that contribute to the so-called dog menace rather than silencing those who cannot protect themselves. “In silencing those who cannot protect themselves, we risk losing something essential within ourselves,” she said, urging the government to reconsider.

Sharmila further added, “This need of experience over sympathy has caused tremendous harm. I hope and pray the Supreme Court will try and find a fine balance embedded in justice.” Her remarks came ahead of Chief Justice Gavai’s decision on 13 August to review the Court’s order in light of the criticism.

Actor Randeep Hooda also welcomed the reconsideration, posting on social media: “So glad to hear that the Honourable CJI has agreed to look into the ruling about stray dogs in NCR. Passing a law and implementing a law should be, firstly, humane and secondly, the infrastructure and sensitivity need to be taken care of.”

Sharmila Tagore was last seen in the Bengali drama Puratawn, released in April, marking her return to Bengali cinema after 14 years under the direction of Suman Ghosh. Randeep Hooda’s latest release was the action thriller Jaat, which hit theatres on 10 April, featuring him as the antagonist opposite Sunny Deol.
