Shrek has established himself as a pop culture figure, whether it is because of the vile Shrek is Love, Shrek is Life movies or the deluge of over-the-top Twitter jokes. Despite the fact that there have been four Shrek films, two spin-offs, and a number of short films, some fans have come to terms with the possibility that Shrek won’t ever experience another adventure with Donkey (Eddie Murphy), Fiona (Cameron Diaz), and the numerous magical creatures found in the fairytale universe. Thankfully, Paramount and Illumination are still dedicated to continuing the franchise’s adventures, including Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022, which recasts Antonio Banderas as the titular swashbuckling feline hero.
But when will Mike Myers’ Lord of the Swamp make a comeback on television? We can confirm that a brand-new film is really in production, and we have some idea of the plot already.
Shrek 5 Plot
What will happen in the upcoming film, even though Puss in Boots does hint toward Shrek 5? It might not be your standard sequel, though. According to Chris Meledandri of Variety, Illumination is approaching Shrek in a novel way.
“The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
They nearly seem to be taking the legacy sequel route. The Swamp Awakens in Shrek Shresurrections? Shrek: 2049? Do Donkey and Shrek face the swamp? Or will they keep it straightforward and use only Shrek? The unknown.
Screenwriter Michael McCullers, who has previously worked on Thunderbirds, The Boss Baby, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, is tasked with reimagining Shrek. McCullers teased The Hollywood Reporter about his approach to the project in his interview.
Shrek 5 cast
Whether DreamWorks and Illumination will be bringing the original actors back to reprise their parts from the previous films is the key issue regarding this new Shrek movie.
It would be quite difficult to replace them with fresh stars since their voice talents are so essential to the characters, and Chris Meledandri is well aware of the legacy they built.
He told Variety, “When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations.”
Fortunately, Mike Myers is prepared to reprise the part; the actor recently told GQ that he’d love to do a Shrek film each year. “The concept of going from a self-loathing ogre to a self-accepting ogre was meaningful to me. I love playing Shrek. If I had to do one ‘Shrek a year, I’d be thrilled.”
Shrek 5 Release date
Prior to online rumors suggesting that Shrek 5 might come around the end of 2022, the film was originally scheduled for a 2019 release. There is currently no release date for Shrek 5, which is a sad reality.
Since Universal splurged out and acquired DreamWorks Entertainment in 2017, whereupon the skilled executive and producer Chris Meledandri were expected to join the top management of the business, Shrek 5 has been in production (via Variety).
Instead, he made the decision to take over the Shrek franchise, putting his initial attention on a fresh Puss in Boots film as well as another full-length Shrek adventure. (It’s also important to note that Meledandri is now working on the Super Mario Bros. movie, in which Chris Pratt will play the title plumber.)
