Significance of Valentine’s Day; Why is it celebrated?

Love is in the air and thats something we can’t deny! But have you ever wondered why we celebrate Valentine’s Day or what is the history behind it? Well, not to worry we are here to tell you as it is because the more you know, the better. Right?

To start off, Valentine’s Day is named after the famous Saint Valentine, who was a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. At the time of Valentine, many Roman were getting converted to Christianity but strict laws were created for what the Christians were about to do by the then, Emperor Claudius II was a Pagan.

Claudius believed that Roman soldiers should completely devote their lives to the country and so passed a strict law prohibiting them from marrying. St. Valetine then began to marry soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies which was known as the beginning of him being known as someone who knew and believed in the importance of love.

But this didn’t go on for long, Valentine was found and jailed for his crimes of disobeying the law created by Claudius. During his time in jailed he cared deeply for his fellow prisoners and even his jailor’s blin daughter. A legend that has been passed on from generations say that it was St. Valentine who then cured her of her blindness and that he wrote her a love letter as his final act before being executed on 14th February 270, signed ‘from your Valentine’. And 200 years later, this day was proclaimed as the St. Valentine’s Day with a tradition of expressing love and admiration usually in secret!
