Smriti Irani’s comeback in the spotlight with the return of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi to television has brought nostalgia for fans. Yet, her recent interview has triggered strong reactions from the cast of Anupamaa. When asked about comparisons between the two hit serials, Smriti downplayed the rivalry, saying Anupamaa cannot be considered competition for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.
In her interview with India Today, Smriti said, “When somebody reaches number 30 in terms of TRPs, then you can be our competition. If you have the capacity to be remembered for 25 years, then we’ll talk about competition.” The statement quickly made its way online, leading to several responses from Anupamaa actors who felt their work was being discredited.
Alpana Buch, who plays Baa in Anupamaa, expressed her disappointment, saying, “Honourable Smriti ji, this was not expected from you.” Her co-star Milloni Kapadia, who portrays Kinjal, wrote, “Breaks my heart to see our love not getting reciprocated.”
Actor Jaswir Kaur also spoke up, pointing out that both shows belong to different eras and shouldn’t be compared. “Why are you even comparing two different shows on the same channel?” she asked. Zalak Desai added that Anupamaa’s continued success speaks for itself, saying, “Nobody here has just started out. Truly, there’s no comparison!”
While Smriti’s remarks highlighted the long-standing legacy of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, the Anupamaa cast reminded viewers that their show too has earned a loyal audience and continues to shape television storytelling today.
