Drishyam will be remade in foreign languages, according to an announcement made in February 2024. This significant event was revealed by Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, who purchased the foreign remake rights to Drishyam 1 and 2 from the original producers, Aashirvad Cinema.
At the time, it was revealed that remakes in the United States and Korea were already in the works, with a deal for the Spanish version being sealed. Almost two years later, it has been confirmed that the Spanish adaptation of Drishyam will begin production in a few months.
According to a source in Bombay Times, Rodrigo Espinel, who will produce Drishyam’s Spanish version, announced at the present International Film Festival of Delhi that filming will begin in June. He explained, “It’s an unusual situation since my partner is a Mexican manufacturer who purchased the IP rights and contacted us because Spain has excellent tax incentives.”
“The concept is perfectly adaptable to Spanish culture. So we’ve started working on it, and we’ll start filming next June. Rodrigo Espinel explains why he believes Drishyam’s version will appeal to the Spanish audience, citing the film’s Spanish director and actors.”
He stated, “In the end, it’s the story of a father trying to protect his kid and a mother trying to find out where her son is, so it’s simple to adapt. As a producer, I believe that adapting a very local movie is tough. Even if we modify the story, the film’s soul will be lost. In this situation, even if it is a very Indian film, it is simple to adapt and connect with our audience.”
Drishyam (2015) is an official remake of Mohanlal’s 2013 film of the same name, starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, and others. Nishikant Kamat directed the film, which told the story of an uneducated father who goes to mad measures to defend his wife and kid when they inadvertently kill a sexual predator. The deceased was the son of a dangerous police officer, which exacerbated the situation. Drishyam was a hit, and its sequel, Drishyam 2 (2022), was an unexpected smash.
The original cast returned for the sequel, joined by Akshaye Khanna. The second installment was directed by Abhishek Pathak, who also directed Drishyam 3, which will be released this year on October 2. While Akshaye Khanna will not appear in Drishyam 3, Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj have joined the cast. Meanwhile, Drishyam 2, the second portion of the original Malayalam version, will be released in 2021. The third installment will be released in theaters this year, on May 21.
