Squid Game season 3: Do we have any update on it?

After a three-year wait, Squid Game made its long-anticipated return to Netflix with season 2 on December 26. For those who have already binged the new episodes, the season ends on a cliffhanger — which isn’t surprising, as the series is set to return for its third and final season in 2025.

So, when can fans expect to watch Squid Game season 3?

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently shared some insight into the release window during an interview with Variety. He was careful to avoid spoilers but hinted that fans could expect an announcement about the release date soon after season 2 launched. He speculated that season 3 might arrive around summer or fall 2025.

This timing makes sense, especially considering the Emmys. After season 1 won multiple Emmys, Netflix is likely to submit season 2 for consideration at the 2025 awards. The eligibility period for the 2025 Emmys runs from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, and if Netflix follows this pattern, they’ll probably submit season 2 for the 2025 Emmys and aim for season 3 to be eligible for the 2026 Emmys. If this is the plan, the earliest fans could see season 3 is June 1, 2025.

In season 2, after the shocking events of season 1, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) is determined to take down the game and seek revenge on the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun). To do so, Gi-hun must infiltrate the game once again and destroy it from within. All seven episodes of season 2 are currently available for streaming on Netflix.

Earlier this year, Netflix confirmed that season 3 will be the final season of Squid Game, set to premiere sometime in 2025. Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed his excitement about bringing the story to a close, saying, “I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come.”
