Steven Gerrard has been named coach of Saudi team Al-Ettifaq, despite earlier refusing the role, the Saudi Pro League club announced on Monday.
Last month, the former Liverpool and England midfielder stated that he would decline an offer to join the squad. However, the 43-year-old has changed his mind and is now the newest big name to join the growing league.
“Where legends are found. We’re thrilled to announce Steven Gerrard is our new head coach,” Al-Ettifaq wrote on Twitter.

The 43-year-old led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership victory in ten years in 2021 before moving on to Aston Villa, where he was fired in October of last year.
Gerrard’s move is the latest in a number of transfers since Al-Nassr bought Cristiano Ronaldo in December. Karim Benzema, a former Real Madrid striker, joined Al-Ittihad in June.
Last season, Al-Ettifaq finished 8th in the top-tier Saudi Pro League.
For the upcoming season, the Saudi top division has been expanded to 18 clubs, with stars like Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante joining Cristiano Ronaldo.
