Suryakumar Yadav smashes quickfire half-century in SMAT debut, powers Mumbai to a strong total

India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, made an impressive start to his Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign in 2024, delivering a standout performance against Services. Playing his first match of the season, the Mumbai middle-order batter smashed a rapid half-century, scoring 50 runs off just 31 balls, to guide his team to a competitive total.

Yadav’s innings was laced with six fours and two sixes, showcasing his trademark aggressive style. Joining forces with Shivam Dube, he helped Mumbai cross the 150-run mark in the 17th over, building on the platform set by Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, who had steadied the innings following an early setback.

Mumbai had a rocky start after losing opener Prithvi Shaw for a duck in the first over, courtesy of a sharp delivery from Poonia. Rahane and Iyer then contributed with steady knocks to stabilize the innings, but it was the acceleration provided by Yadav and Dube in the later stages that propelled Mumbai to a formidable score.

The match underlined the depth of Mumbai’s star-studded line-up, which featured prominent names like Rahane, Iyer, Shaw, and Dube, alongside Suryakumar Yadav. The captain’s explosive return to form will undoubtedly boost Mumbai’s confidence as they aim to make a strong impact in the tournament.
