Tamil Nadu: elderly woman allegedly blocks Dalit students from using common path, booked

The local police here filed a case against a woman and her family after a group of Dalit students were allegedly refused permission to use a nearby common walkway, according to the police. The video shows a few youngsters walking down the path in Kollangarai hamlet in Thanjavur Taluk on a Friday morning while carrying backpacks and wearing school uniforms.

An old woman yells at them not to use the route and blocks them with a stick. “A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed,” a top Thanjavur Taluk police official stated. “There haven’t been any arrests yet. The woman and her family have become the subject of a formal complaint. “An investigation is underway,” PTI stated on Saturday.

According to reports, the locals complained that family members were preventing them from using the common path, also known as the “vehicle route” or “vandi pathai.” In the past, the villages said that in order to get to their various destinations, they had to travel a lengthier route that involved a 1.5-kilometer roundabout around a body of water.
