Tata chooses UK to build $5 billion Jaguar Land Rover gigafactory

India’s Tata Group will build an electric vehicle battery plant in Britain to deliver its Jaguar Land Rover factories, which will bring a major boost for car industry in UK. This comes amid the nation’s need of domestic battery production to help secure its future.

The announcement marks Britain’s biggest move in the car gigafactory space as it seeks to keep up with European Union and the United States in the race to build green industries.

On Wednesday, the Tata Group announced that it will build its first gigafactory outside India in Britain, which will cost the investment of 4 billion pounds ($5.2 billion). The proposed plan will also generate employment for up to 4,000 people and produce an initial output of 40 gigawatt hours.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has declined to share the details over the financial support promised by the country, in order to fend off Spain, which had also lobbied to win the project. However, it was reported by BBC, that the government will provide subsidies worth hundreds of millions of pounds to Tata.
