The Boy and the Heron, Hayao Miyazaki’s new film, opened in Japan last month to amazing reviews and massive box office numbers. Despite the mystery surrounding the movie, the hype is still huge.
However, while The Boy and the Heron will open the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, making it the first animated movie to do so, people in the West are left wondering when we will be able to watch the new film.
However, on September 6, Studio Ghibli finally showed mercy by releasing a trailer. Nevertheless, the tone of the trailer hints that this forthcoming film may be the studio’s darkest yet.
The new trailer for The Boy and the Heron opens with darkness and fire, evoking similar imagery to Grave of the Fireflies, another of Studio Ghibli’s bleakest films. There are also some horrific shots, music, and a tagline that says, “Where death comes to an end.” Check out the trailer below.
