‘The Equalizer 3’ Review: Denzel Washington returns for more numbingly violent vngeance

The reviews for The Equalizer 3 are out and they look to be mixed. The third and last chapter of Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer trilogy sees vigilante Robert McCall, played by Denzel Washington, retiring to Southern Italy. There, he must later fight the Silician Mafia to save his friends. Washington reunites with his Man on Fire co-star Dakota Fanning in the Equalizer 3 cast, which also stars David Denman, Sonia Ammar and Remo Girone in supporting roles.

Today, ahead of The Equalizer 3’s September 1 release date, critics began giving their opinions on the threequel. The consensus calls it another showcase for Denzel Washington’s star power and Antoine Fuqua’s slick action, but critics are divided on other parts of the movie. Some believe the action trilogy’s climax a “fitting send-off,” while others label it uneven. Check out some reviews below:

Murtada Elfadl, Variety

“Reteaming for the fifth time, director Antoine Fuqua and his ‘Training Day’ star leverage the familiarity they’ve established for the audience’s benefit.”

Amon Warmann, Empire

“A solid conclusion to an unlikely trilogy and a fitting end to Robert McCall’s character arc — with Washington still entertaining as a deliverer of slick justice.”

Kate Erbland, IndieWire

“The third (and final?) film in the action franchise gifts Robert McCall his greatest nemesis yet: the real-deal Camorra mafia.”

While the latest Equalizer movie might not quite match up to the previous two films, it still comes quite close. The plot is almost non-existent for much of the film’s duration, but it balances by featuring some of the trilogy’s most horrific moments to date. The violence is almost on the level of Saw film and the amount of tonal whiplash between scenes of Washington purchasing fish at the local market and beating bad guys is unlikely to convert anyone who wasn’t a fan of the prior instalments.
