Today, an amended agreement has been announced to streamline the collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI, focusing on flexibility, certainty, and the broad delivery of AI benefits. This revised agreement enhances predictability, enabling both companies to efficiently build and operate AI platforms at scale while retaining the freedom to explore new opportunities.
As part of the agreement, Microsoft will continue to be OpenAI’s primary cloud partner. OpenAI products will initially launch on Azure unless Microsoft cannot or chooses not to support the required capabilities. Additionally, OpenAI will now have the ability to offer its products to customers across any cloud provider.
Microsoft will maintain a license to OpenAI’s intellectual property for models and products until 2032, although this license will now be non-exclusive. Furthermore, Microsoft will no longer pay a revenue share to OpenAI. However, OpenAI will continue to make revenue share payments to Microsoft through 2030, at the same percentage but with a total cap, regardless of OpenAI’s technological advancements.
Microsoft remains a significant shareholder in OpenAI, directly participating in its growth. While the amendment simplifies the partnership, the collaborative efforts remain ambitious. The companies are working together on scaling datacenter capacity, developing next-generation silicon, and applying AI to enhance cybersecurity, among other initiatives. Microsoft and OpenAI are enthusiastic about continuing to advance and scale AI for people and organizations globally.
