The Top Five Global Startup Hubs

We examined the geographic distribution of global activity in the materials industry. We identified 39 regional hubs that are active in developing technology-driven solutions in the industry, such as sustainable dyes and adhesives, lightweight composites, and hydrophobic coatings, to name a few.

We examined a sample of 2.834 startups* within the hubs that use technology-driven solutions to innovate in the industry. 806 startups are based in Silicon Valley, New York City, London, Los Angeles, and Boston, which account for 28% of global activity in materials. Let’s take a look at some of the innovative solutions developed by these five top hubs.

281 Startups in Silicon Valley

The hub’s materials sector is growing as a result of Silicon Valley’s leadership in technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence (AI). Material startups use these technologies in conjunction with materials science to discover new chemicals, improve design processes, and test applications. Startups in the region create new materials for a variety of applications, including flexible screens and sustainable fashion items.

164 Startups in New York City

Some of the world’s leading material companies, such as Dupont and 3M, are headquartered in New York City. Furthermore, materials processing startups serve a wide range of industries such as ceramics, chemicals, metals, plastics, and so on. Through its Centres for Advanced Technology (CATs), the city fosters industry-academia collaborations on advanced materials, nanomaterials, and multifunctional printing, to name a few technologies.

154 Startups in London

The United Kingdom is advancing digital materials approaches. Innovate UK’s manufacturing and materials programme aims to improve resource efficiency and material process flexibility. Startups in the materials sector offer smart solutions in packaging and textiles as food manufacturing and textiles make a comeback in London.

108 Startups in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a manufacturing hub, owing to its proximity to large ports that allow for the rapid movement of raw materials and finished goods. The region’s thriving aerospace and automotive industries necessitate constant material innovation, particularly in lightweight alloys. In line with the city’s green economy goals, top universities in Los Angeles conduct extensive research on advanced materials.

99 Startups in Boston

Boston’s manufacturing embraces technology and the materials sector, which is primarily focused on biomaterials, polymers, and specialty chemicals. The region’s engineering universities, such as Harvard and MIT, contribute both innovations and tech talent in materials science. Material startups are also encouraged to grow by focused venture firms and incubators such as Material Impact.
