We examined the geographic distribution of global activity in the materials industry. We identified 39 regional hubs that are active in developing technology-driven solutions in the industry, such as sustainable dyes and adhesives, lightweight composites, and hydrophobic coatings, to name a few.
We examined a sample of 2.834 startups* within the hubs that use technology-driven solutions to innovate in the industry. 806 startups are based in Silicon Valley, New York City, London, Los Angeles, and Boston, which account for 28% of global activity in materials. 281 Startups in Silicon Valley
The hub’s materials sector is growing as a result of Silicon Valley’s leadership in technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence (AI). Material startups use these technologies in conjunction with materials science to discover new chemicals, improve design processes, and test applications. Startups in the region create new materials for a variety of applications, including flexible screens and sustainable fashion items.
