Meta’s Threads, which is a new competitor for Twitter was launched on Thursday, and now has over 50 million users, in just 24 hours since the app was rolled out. The text-based social media platform is closely tied to Meta’s popular app Instagram. While the brisk rise of Threads is impressive, it must be noted that Meta is using its base of 2.35 billion active users on Instagram to sign up for Threads.
On Friday, The Verge’s Alex Heath shared a Threads post which revealed that the platform has crossed 48 million user registration, citing internal data from Meta. Another Threads user, Joe Scannell posted a screenshot of a recent Threads sing-up number that showed the figure has surpassed 50 million mark.
As a part of Meta’s push to get users to sign up for Threads, it displays a serial number on the Instagram profile of each user – indicating when they sign up for the service.
It must be noted that Threads is not available in every country. Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg is yet to roll out the app in EU, supposedly due to the stringent privacy regulations in the region.
The app has grabbed the highest spot on the list of apps in multiple countries. In India, the top free apps on iOS are Threads, followed by WhatsApp and Instagram.
