Bakayoko arrived at Chelsea from the Ligue 1 club AS Monaco for a fee of £40 million in July 2017, and signed a 5-year contract with the Blues. This made him the 2nd most expensive signing at the time, after striker Fernando Torres. He was an important player at Monaco and helped them the Ligue 1 title in the 2016/17 season. But the French midfielder could not continue his previous splendid form at Stamford Bridge and was criticized by pundits and fans alike.
In the 2017/18 season, he signed for AC Milan on loan when Gattuso was the head coach at the Italian club. He returned back to France to his former club Monaco in the following season. In June 2020 he reunited with Gattuso again at Napoli on a loan deal.
Gattuso is said to be an admirer of the French midfielder and wants to reunite with him again for the third time at Fiorentina where he was appointed as head coach for the 2021/22 season.
Bakayoko scored 2 goals for Napoli in 32 appearances for the club in the 2020/21 Serie A season.
