Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has reached the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics. In the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s 69 kg weight category, 23-year-old Lovlina defeated Germany’s 35-year-old boxer Nadine Apetz. Lovlina won the bout 3-2 by split decision.
The overall decision of the judges in all three rounds was in favor of Lovlina. The Indian boxer is now just one win away from securing a medal. In boxing, at least a bronze medal is confirmed as soon as you reach the semi-finals.

Lovlina’s next bout is to be held on July 30 against Chin Nien Chen of Chinese Taipei. If she wins, she will become only the second woman boxer in the country after MC Mary Kom to win an Olympic medal in boxing. Mary Kom won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Lovlina once had told in an interview that she started boxing after being influenced by Muhammad Ali. His father Tiken Borgohain once brought sweets wrapped in newspaper from the market. In that newspaper clipping was printed about Muhammad Ali. She learned about Muhammad Ali from his father. Since then she started dreaming of making a career in boxing.
Lovlina has won the bronze medal in the World Boxing Championships held in 2018 and 2019. At the same time, she has won silver in the first Indian Open International Boxing Tournament held in Delhi and a gold medal in the second Indian Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati. Apart from this, she has also won the Bronze Medal in the 2017 Asian Boxing Championship. Also, she has represented the country in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
