Tokyo Olympics: The Tokyo Games organizers hit by data breach and information leak

Yet another setback; Tokyo Games organizers hit by data breach & info leak.

According to a Japan agency, the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee is the latest victim of a data hack. The data breach occurred as a result of unlawful access to an information-sharing technology built by Fujitsu Ltd.

Personal information was released from around 170 people involved in security management and who took part in a simulation held by Japan’s national cybersecurity center to prepare for any intrusions during the major athletic event.

With just 50 days until the Olympics begin in Japan’s capital, organizers and the government are stepping up efforts to prevent hackers from spoiling the events. The center declined to comment on whether the stolen material was connected to the games and stated that no interruptions in the operations of any of the enterprises targeted had been confirmed.

The disclosed material includes the names, company titles, and connections of around 90 companies, including the organizing body of the Olympics and Paralympics, ministries, local governments hosting sites such as Tokyo and Fukushima Prefecture, and game sponsors.

Takahito Tokita, president of Fujitsu, which is also hired to manage customers’ computer systems, apologized to Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa for the data breach the same day.

In late May, Fujitsu said that the data of some of its corporate clients had been compromised as a result of illegal access to the tool, which is used to transmit information between internal and external partners of a firm. The breach was most likely caused by a malware infestation, but the business is still researching the reason and the degree of the damage.

According to government institutions such as the foreign and transportation ministries, at least 76,000 email addresses of government employees and external parties, such as panel members, as well as research materials on developing a digital government, were compromised.
