Boxer M C Mary Kom (51kg) entered the women’s flyweight (48-51kg) round of 16 by defeating Miguelina Garcia of the Dominican Republic in the round of 32 at the Kokugikan Arena. Mary Kom beat Miguelina 4-1 in a round of 32 matches on Sunday, after the first two rounds, the scoreline was level at 19-19 and that made the match very exciting. In Round 3, Mary Kom performed brilliantly and managed to secure the win.
The match was very exciting from the start with Mary Kom showing some great technique and defeating Garcia’s tough challenge. In the first round, Mary Kom took time to test her opponent but then the veteran boxer showed aggression in the three minutes of the third round. Garcia, however, collected points in the second round with some strong punches.
Mary Kom dominated the match with her powerful ‘right hook’. She also encouraged Garcia to move towards himself so that he would get space to hit the right punch. The boxer from the Republic of Dominican presented a tough challenge but could not land her punches properly.
Mary Kom, a mother of four children, will next take on Colombia’s third seed Ingrit Valencia, who is the 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist. Mary Kom has faced the Colombian boxer twice and won both, including the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Championship.
