The Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib is the holiest religious shrine for Sikhs. The foundation stone was laid down by Sufi saint Mir Mohammed at the request of the 5th guru of Sikhism Arjan Dev. The gurdwara is built around an artificial pool. At first, the Harmandir Sahib was built with stones & marbles but it was destructed many times. After establishing the Sikh empire Maharaja Ranjit Singh rebuilt the gurudwara again & overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. The Golden Temple is a must-visit place in Amritsar.
