Dutch international Frenkie de Jong is a midfielder for Spanish club Barcelona and the Netherlands national team. He is a dynamic midfielder with good defensive and offensive talents.
De Jong began his professional career in 2015 at Willem II. A year later, he moved to Ajax for a price of €1. He established himself as one of Europe’s top young midfielders with Ajax, winning the domestic double and reaching the Champions League semi-finals. De Jong then agreed to join Barcelona for a sum of €75 million in January 2019.
Here are some of his most famous quotes:
His quote about Leo Messi:
“I’m excited and anxious about playing with him. In my opinion, Leo Messi is the best player in history. It’s difficult to define him. He’s the most complete player and can do anything. He creates a lot of chances, is very intelligent and has a spectacular left foot. He’s simply on another level.”
About people comparing him to Cryuff:
“I try not to pay attention to talk of comparisons. I only want to focus on myself. It is good to hear that people are talking like that, but the truth is I am not at Cruyff’s level of talent, and I never will be, so it is not something I think about.”
Regarding being the most expensive Dutch signing:
“It is nice to be the most expensive Dutchman, and it is nice for my agent and for Ajax. But it does not matter to me whether I cost €5m or €150m or €200m. I just need to make sure that I do my own thing.”
On choosing Barcelona over Manchester City and PSG:
“(PSG) were one of the best options. The club, the team, the coach impressed me. They gave me the chance to play consistency and Ligue 1 could be an advantage, there is still time to grow. I went to Manchester and Paris and I spoke to Tuchel and Guardiola. My choice is not a decision against those clubs but in favour of Barcelona. The challenge is huge. Regarding France I didn’t have the feeling that I wanted to play there for 10 years.”
His response to what separates him from the rest:
“My quality is my intuition. I can’t just ignore that, can I? Then I’d be a player of whom there are a thousand of my age.”
Frenkie de Jong has been instrumental for Barcelona in the previous 20-21 season and will hope to continue his form for the Euros. How far do you can Netherlands reach with the likes of De Jong, Depay and without the presense of Virgil Van Dijk?
