Tata Power Commissions One of India’s Largest Group Captive Wind Projects for Tata Steel

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has commissioned a 198 MW group captive wind project in Karur, Tamil Nadu, supplying clean energy to Tata Steel and strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The project includes 55 wind turbines of 3.6 MW capacity each and is expected to generate 31 million units of renewable electricity annually. The clean energy generated will offset around 26,350 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

The Karur wind project was executed entirely through TPREL’s self-EPC model, with the company directly handling engineering, civil works, balance of plant activities, transmission infrastructure and substations. This execution strategy reduced reliance on external contractors and enabled faster project delivery.

Despite challenging terrain and logistical complexities, the project achieved record timelines. Foundation works were completed in 126 days, and turbine installation was finalised within 167 days, setting new industry benchmarks.

With this commissioning, TPREL continues to expand its wind energy footprint and reinforce its role in supporting India’s clean energy transition and long-term decarbonisation goals.
