A rising star in world cinema, Swedish director Ruben stlund, will soon release his satirical dark comedy Triangle of Sadness. Force Majeure (2014), about a family on vacation in the Alps, was his breakout movie. When an apparent avalanche starts to approach, Thomas abandons his family and only tries to save himself. Of course, everyone lives, and Thomas is forced to justify why he purposefully left his family for dead.
Stlund made Triangle of Sadness, his most recent picture, and The Square (2017), a parody on the oddities of the art world, both of which earned the Palme d’Or, the top honour at the Cannes Film Festival. Stlund has established a solid reputation for his incisive dark comedy and societal critiques after three straight box office blockbusters.
Triangle of Sadness: What about the plot?
Triangle of Sadness is a caustic social satire, similar to Stlund’s earlier works, but this time focused on the obscenely wealthy and famous. The supermodel pair Carl and Yaya are asked to join an exclusive cruise in the movie. They encounter a colourful group of personalities on the opulent boat, including a Russian oligarch, a British arms dealer, and the skipper, a Marxist.
In this case, the customer is always right, even though they are wholly incorrect. The crew of the ship is forbidden to ever say “no” to any of the guests’ absurd requests. In one scenario, a wealthy woman insists on seeing the crew clean the ship’s sails despite being informed that the boat is powered and devoid of sails.
Triangle of Sadness: What about the cast?
Harris Dickinson (Beach Rats, Where the Crawdads Sing), who plays the character of male model Carl, and Charlbi Dean, a South African actress and model best known for her role in the superhero drama series Black Lightning, who plays the role of female model Yaya, make up the key relationship. Tragically, as the movie was being promoted, Dean passed tragically in late August at the age of 32. The autopsy has not yet been finished, and the cause of death is still undetermined. She was discovered to have a viral infection in her lungs at the hospital, which may have been caused by the 2008 accident that led to the removal of her spleen, making her more susceptible to infections.
Triangle of Sadness: When will it release?
The American theatre premiere of Triangle of Sadness is scheduled for October 7, 2022. The movie will be distributed by Neon, a business that has made its name by distributing obscure, foreign, indie movies that might otherwise have trouble finding a home on American theatre screens.
