Trump impeachment: US Senate votes to proceed with trial

The US Senate on Tuesday voted to go ahead with the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump after an emotional opening day. The senators, now jurors voted 56-44 on whether the impeached former president should be put on trial.

Trump’s defense team claimed that he cannot be convicted as a former President and that it would be unconditional to do so. The claim was declined by the senate.

Congressman Jamie Raskin, in opening remarks, declared, “That’s a high crime and misdemeanor. If that’s not an impeachable offense, then there’s no such thing.”

The House acquitted Trump of two articles of impeachment, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate acquitted these charges on February 5, 2020.
