Two TMC Students’ Wing Members Suspended Over Short Film Controversy

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) students’ wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), suspended two senior members on Friday for alleged “anti-party activities” after they made a short film linked to a controversial case. The two members, Prantik Chakraborty and Rajanya Haldar, were removed following the release of a poster for their film, Agamani, Tilottomader Golpo (The Tale of Tilottoma), which referenced the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

Rajanya Haldar had uploaded the film’s poster on social media, highlighting its connection to the RG Kar incident. Directed by Chakraborty, the film is set to release in October. The TMCP, however, distanced itself from the project.

State president Trinankur Bhattacharya issued a statement saying the suspension would remain until the party’s disciplinary committee reaches a decision. The party clarified that the students violated internal discipline and created a false perception that the TMCP was endorsing the film.

Prantik Chakraborty defended the film, stating it had no direct link to the RG Kar case. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh also weighed in, stressing that while creative freedom is respected, exploiting tragic incidents like the RG Kar case for personal projects would face consequences. The incident has sparked debate on the boundaries between creative expression and political sensitivities within the party.
