In Tuesday’s Champions League last 16 first leg, Real Madrid defeated RB Leipzig 1-0 due to an amazing solo goal from Brahim Diaz.
At the start, Leipzig were energetic but wasteful, and Andriy Lunin, the Madrid goalkeeper, made several saves after the hosts had a goal controversially disallowed for offside. Diaz opened the score early in the second half.
Diaz, who replaced the injured Jude Bellingham, walked past three Leipzig players before curling an inch-perfect shot inside the far post.
Real Madrid’s seventh win in seven Champions League matches puts them in a strong position to advance to the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season.
After suffering an ankle injury during Saturday’s 4-0 victory against Girona, England midfielder Bellingham could not travel with Madrid to Saxony.
Due to injuries to first-choice centre-backs David Alaba, Eder Militao and Antonio Ruediger, coach Carlo Ancelotti kept midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni playing central defence.
Despite their injury difficulties, Real Madrid remains five points clear in the league and has only lost twice all season in all competitions, both against derby rivals Atletico Madrid.
Real Madrid will host Leipzig in the Spanish capital on March 6.
