Voting has started for the 2025 vice presidential election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast the first vote in the secret ballot to select India’s next vice president. The two candidates are B Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, of the Congress-led INDIA group, and CP Radhakrishnan, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA and a former governor of multiple states.
After Jagdeep Dhankar abruptly resigned, citing health reasons, the vice presidential election is being held. At ten in the morning on Tuesday, the vice presidential election voting began. The polls will continue until 5 PM, with the Electoral College already casting their votes. Voter counting will start after 6 PM and is anticipated to continue into the evening, according to the Election Commission of India, which is in charge of holding the elections.
Therefore, the outcome of the election of India’s next vice president is anticipated later tonight. Of the 788 members of the electoral college, 245 are from the Rajya Sabha and 543 are from the Lok Sabha. Voting in the election will also be open to the 12 Rajya Sabha members who have been nominated.
With six Rajya Sabha seats and one Lok Sabha seat up for grabs, the electoral college’s strength is 781 under the current administration. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the NDA have 429 MPs supporting Radhakrishnan, notwithstanding abstentions from other parties.
