Indian batsman Vinod Kambli, who played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India during the 90s, has applied for the post of junior selector for the Indian national cricket team. The 49-year-old has 1,084 test runs, including four hundreds and 2,477 ODI runs, including 14 half centuries and a couple of hundred has applied as a junior selector for the national team. On 14th April the BCCI announced five new national selectors, the final date of application was 26th April 2021. On being asked about the matter Kambli said “Yes I have applied for the post ….I want to give Indian cricket something back that’s offered to me.” On Monday, Kambli added “I want to work to build up our team’s bench strength and help the BCCI uncover promising young people.”
The stylish left-hander scored 9,965 in 129 first class matches at an average of 59.67, with 35 hundreds and 44 fifties in a fruitful top class career. Kambli is now a member of the Cricket Enhancement Committee of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
BCCI announced that the challenger teams of under-23 and under-22 would be chosen by the selected candidate. The former Indian off-spinner Aashish Kapoor led the previous selection committee, and others included Gyanendra Pandey, Rakesh Parekh and Debasis Mohanty. In January, Mohanty had been elevated to the senior panel.
The criteria set by BCCI were, the candidate should have played 25 first-class games , served a Ranji state, and retired five or more years ago.
The new selecting committee will select the squad for under-19 world cup, which is scheduled next year in New Zealand.
